Elizabeth Galloway students and lecturers do us proud in the South Africa Fashion Week Vodacom 4U Student Competition and Elle New Talent competition

This year Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion was proud to have two students take part in the South Africa Fashion Week, held from 22-25 September 2011.

Two of our students, Amy Pyne-James and Thilana Blignaut, went through to be two of the 14 finalist selected from 224 entrants and were given the opportunity to showcase their pieces to the delight of local fashionistas. According to the rules of the competition, each girl was expected to create one piece made from denim clothing pieces.

Thilana designed a dress around the central themes of architecture and the ocean; she wanted to include the feel that reminded of an old beach house. She decided to go with a 50's style bustier dress to carry her vintage feel through using the structured elements of architecture and the natural colour scheme of the ocean.

Amy's piece, which she dubbed Denim Deconstruction, featured a beautifully elegant wedding dress made entirely from denim.

In Amy's creation she wanted to challenge the original perception of denim. Following the timeline of denim, starting at workmen clothing to casual wear and now to the intimacy of something as special as a wedding dress, Amy also incorporated the traditions of a wedding theme.

Amy took second place in the SAFW Vodacom4U competition and won a Macbook Air, a cash prize and a 21"iMac for the school. Congratulations Amy!

Not to be outdone by his students, our very own lecturer Charl Jansen van Rensburg showed his range at the opening of South Africa Fashion Week in the Elle New Talent /Mr Price competition, where he took part as one of this year's finalists.

His range is described as:

"Sophistication and structural integrity married with vivid textured colors, softened by silk chiffons and suiting. Expression through silhouette and shape combined with prints challenging ones understanding of composition. A story formulated by the patterns of each garment, symbolizing the pattern of life."

We are so proud to have such talented students and lecturers at our school. Well done to all of you!
